After another summer lifeguarding at Lake Mead, I spent the following winter backpacking in New Zealand before returning to Missoula and graduating in wildlife biology. I was working as a river ranger on the Snake River four years later when my salmon fought their way back upstream from the Pacific, through the dams and the fishermen. Of the two and a half million eggs I’d guarded, fewer than twenty fish returned to Indian Creek.
